Hamburg Garden Show
Germany holds an International Garden Show every other year. http://www.igs-hamburg.de/en/
In 2013 the site is 100 hectares on Wilhelmsburg Island in the Elbe River. We were there on Thursday,
August 1, one of the hottest days of the year, so there were no crowds and almost no one late in the day.
The main walk from the square is World of Ports with gardens in the centre
and on both sides. There were exhibits of tea, coffee, a bamboo structure.
The 3.5 km monorail had three stations in the area. We chose to wander along the 6 km path.
There are permanent allotment gardens around Wilhelmsburg and they were included in Cultural Heritage.
From World of Water.
The Hamburg Police band performing at one of several stages.
The exhibition hall just inside the entrance presented exotic plants and commercial exhibits.
In the exhibition hall. A different programme each day, today tomatoes.
A huge park outside with gardens scattered throughout.
A rock garden. Make your own flowers by balancing stones on the rods.
A collection of sheep presented by some of the attractions in Lüneburg Heath, the natural region south of Hamburg.
A secret enclosed garden. The curious can climb the steps and walk around.
Lots of bees
and beautiful flowers.
Near the entrance, a new administrative building, part of the urban renewal of Wilhelmsburg.
